Greet the day from the water
An early morning paddle on Chichester Harbour as the sun comes up. Glide over mirror-still water, watch the sky change colour and experience the harbour waking up around you - birdsong, soft golden light and a stillness that you simply can't find later in the day.
Short, peaceful and unforgettable. The hardest part is setting the alarm.
The harbour before anyone else
We launch in the half-light, when the sky is somewhere between night and day and the water is blissfully still. The air is cool, the world is quiet and for a while it feels like the entire harbour belongs to just us.
As we paddle out, the eastern sky starts to change. First a pale glow, then colour - pinks, oranges and golds that deepen and shift by the minute. The water picks up every shade and reflects it back, so you're paddling through colour in every direction. The moment the sun breaks the horizon, the entire harbour ignites and for a few minutes everything - the water, the clouds and the far shore - is lit with the kind of light that photographers spend careers chasing.
The wildlife is different at dawn. Herons are already hunting, cormorants spread their wings to dry on the channel markers and the seals are at their most curious, popping up to investigate these strange early-morning visitors. We paddle for about an hour, take it all in and head back to the slipway as the rest of the world is just starting to think about breakfast.
