Paddling, scenery and a cuppa on the banks of Chichester Harbour
A gentle canoe trip with a twist - halfway through we pull up on a secluded bank, fire up the wood-burning kettle and enjoy a proper brew surrounded by nothing but countryside. Tea, coffee, or hot chocolate - with biscuits included.
Travel in comfortable tandem canoes, perfect for beginners and families. The paddling is easy, the scenery is gorgeous and everything tastes better outdoors. It just does.
The best cup of tea you'll have this year
We set off in tandem canoes, which are wider, more stable, and sit higher on the water than kayaks. They're the comfortable option - the sofa of the paddling world - and ideal for a trip that's more about enjoyment than exercise.
The first half of the paddle takes us along a beautiful stretch of river, past overhanging willows, through quiet channels and into the kind of countryside that makes you take a deep breath and wonder why you don't do this more often. We keep the pace gentle - this isn't a workout, it's an experience.
Then we pull up on a sandy bank or tucked-away spot that we know from years of exploring these waterways. Out comes the wood-fired kettle and within a few minutes the smell of woodsmoke and brewing tea drifts across the water. There's something very satisfying about sitting on a riverbank with a hot drink, watching the water go by, knowing you paddled there yourself. The return trip feels even more relaxed, possibly because you've been fuelled up with a brew and biscuits!
