Cross the Solent to the Isle of Wight by sea kayak
An adventurous open-water crossing from Hayling Island to Ryde on the Isle of Wight and back. Paddle past historic sea forts, cross one of the UK's busiest shipping channels, and enjoy a well-earned break on Ryde beach before the tide carries you home. A serious but hugely rewarding challenge.
This tour is for experienced paddlers only. Once we leave the coast, there are no opportunities to come ashore until we reach the Island.
Crossing the busiest waterway in the south
There's a moment, about a kilometre offshore, when the land behind starts to shrink and the Isle of Wight ahead still looks impossibly far away. The Solent is one of the busiest shipping channels in the UK and you're crossing it in a kayak. It focuses the mind wonderfully.
We time the crossing to work with the tides, launching from Hayling Island and paddling south through the harbour entrance before striking out into open water. The Solent is rarely still - there's current, there's chop and there are container ships, ferries and yachts to navigate around. Our guides know these waters well and plan every crossing meticulously.
The sea forts appear first - Victorian ironclads sitting in the middle of the Solent like something from a film. Then the Isle of Wight shoreline starts to gain detail, including the pier at Ryde, the sandy beach and the treeline behind. Landing on Ryde beach after a Solent crossing feels like a genuine achievement, because it is one. We stop for lunch, rest and prepare for the return crossing with the tide in our favour. By the end of the day, you've crossed the Solent twice under your own power. Not many people can say that.
