Paddle around Portsmouth's historic waterfront

A full circumnavigation of Portsea Island by sea kayak, taking in Portsmouth's extraordinary maritime heritage from a perspective most people never see. Pass beneath the Spinnaker Tower, paddle alongside HMS Victory's dry dock, cross the harbour entrance and explore the coastline of one of Britain's most historic naval cities.

Around 21km of varied paddling - harbour, open coast, and tidal channels, in a single unforgettable day.

Portsea Circumnavigation Tour

A city built on the sea, seen from the sea

Portsmouth's relationship with the sea is written into every building, every dock, every piece of shoreline. From a kayak, you read that story at water level - past warships, under fortifications, alongside ferry terminals and through harbour entrances that have launched fleets for centuries.

We start from Hayling Island and work our way around the island anticlockwise. The harbour section is fascinating - you're paddling past the Naval Dockyard, the Historic Ships and the commercial port where cross-Channel ferries dwarf everything around them. Then the open coast, where the views stretch across the Solent and the paddle takes on a different character.

The highlight for many people is the harbour entrance - a narrow channel where the tidal current runs fast and the big ships pass close by. We time it carefully and cross with the tide, which is about as exhilarating as paddling gets without involving white water. By the end of the day, you've circumnavigated an entire island, covered twenty-one kilometres and seen a side of Portsmouth that even locals rarely experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we paddle past the Naval Dockyard?
Yes — you'll paddle alongside the Historic Dockyard, past where HMS Victory and the Mary Rose are housed. It's a unique perspective on Portsmouth's maritime heritage.
What experience do I need?
Previous sea kayaking experience is required. The harbour entrance has strong tidal currents, and the open coast section requires confidence in bigger water.
How far is it?
Approximately 21km around the full island. The tides are used to assist the paddle, making the distance more manageable than it sounds.
Is there a lot of boat traffic?
Yes — Portsmouth is a working port with ferries, naval vessels, and commercial traffic. Our guides know the harbour well and plan the route to cross busy areas safely.
Where do we stop for lunch?
We stop on one of the beaches around the coast. Bring a packed lunch and water.
What time do I need to arrive for my booking?
Aim to arrive 10-15 minutes before your session starts, so we can get everyone on the water on time.
