Explore one of England's most beautiful harbours by kayak

Paddle through the winding channels and saltmarshes of Chichester Harbour, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This guided tour takes you through some of the harbour's most scenic stretches, with chances to spot swans, herons and a wealth of birdlife along the way.

Our expert guides share the harbour's rich maritime history as you paddle, from ancient smuggling routes to the sailing heritage that makes this stretch of water famous. Suitable for all abilities with a little confidence on the water.

Discovering the harbour's hidden corners

There's a moment, about ten minutes into the paddle, when the village of Itchenor disappears behind a bend and the harbour reveals itself. The water stretches out in every direction, channels weaving between islands of marsh grass that shift and shimmer with the tide. It's hard to believe you're less than an hour from London.

We follow the natural flow of the harbour, hugging the shoreline where the wildlife congregates. Grey herons stand frozen in the shallows, waiting for the moment to strike. Little egrets — brilliant white against the dark mud — pick their way along the water's edge. If the tide is right, we'll paddle into the narrower creeks where the kayaks glide silently between banks just a paddle's width apart so you can feel fully immersed in nature.

Further out, the harbour opens up and the views stretch to the South Downs in one direction and across to Hayling Island in the other. On clear days, the light on the water is extraordinary — the kind of view that makes you stop paddling and just sit for a moment. Our guides know these waters extremely well and will tailor the route to the conditions, the group and whatever the wildlife is doing that day.
