Paddle around Hayling Island in a day
A classic full-day sea kayaking trip that takes you on a complete circumnavigation of Hayling Island. Timed with the tides for maximum assistance, this 22km journey combines sheltered harbour paddling, open coast, wildlife, and some of the best views on the south coast.
A proper adventure with real distance and the satisfaction of finishing exactly where you started!
A full lap of the island
We set off from the southeast corner of Hayling and immediately the tide is with us, pulling us along the harbour side of the island where the water is sheltered and the birdlife is superb. Langstone Harbour is one of the most important wading bird sites in Europe and from a kayak you're right in the middle of it.
Rounding the northern tip, we cross the harbour entrance and pick up the western shore, where the character changes completely. The open Solent stretches out ahead, the Isle of Wight sits on the horizon and the paddling takes on a different feel - bigger water, bigger views and the sense of being properly out on the sea.
The southern coast is the showstopper. Sandy beaches, the old seafront and then the open coast where the waves roll in from the Channel. The tide carries us around the final stretch and the moment you see the launch point ahead, knowing you've paddled the entire island, is genuinely special. Twenty-two kilometres. One island. No shortcuts.
