Build confidence on the water
Falling in is part of paddling. Knowing what to do when it happens, and how to help someone else, is what turns a nervous moment into a non-event.
Our Safety and Rescue course is a practical, in-the-water session designed for recreational paddlers who want to feel more capable and self-reliant. Over two and a half hours at Itchenor, you'll work through the core rescue skills every paddler should have in their back pocket, plus the basics of reading wind and tide so you can plan trips with confidence.
You won't leave as an expert, and that's not the point. You'll leave knowing what to do if things don't go to plan.
What you'll cover
- What happens if I fall in? Staying calm, staying with your boat, and what to do next
- Self-rescue - Getting yourself back into your kayak in open water
- Rescuing a friend or family member - Practical, repeatable techniques that work for paddlers of all sizes.
- Coming out of a capsized kayak - The wet exit, calmly and safely
- Towing - How to help a tired or struggling paddler back to safety
- Wind and tide - Spotting which way the tide is running, where the wind shadows are and how both shape your day on the water
- What to take with you - A simple, sensible kit list for recreational trips
We work through everything on the water in Chichester Harbour, with plenty of time to practise each skill until it feels natural.
Who it's for
This course is aimed at newer and recreational paddlers who want to build their skills and confidence. It's a great follow-on from our Discover course, but you don't need to have paddled with us before. You just need to be water confident and happy to get wet.
Suitable for sit-on-top and sit-inside kayakers. The core skills are the same at this level, so you're welcome to bring whichever style you prefer to paddle.
Minimum age: 14. Under 18s must be accompanied by a paddling adult.
Group size: Maximum 1:4 instructor ratio, so you'll get plenty of individual attention.
