Build your sea kayaking skills in a day
Our Discover Sea Kayaking course gives you a solid foundation in sea kayaking over a single day. Based out of Itchenor on Chichester Harbour, you'll learn the essential skills to paddle confidently and safely, with the chance to gain a Paddle UK accreditation at the end of the day.
Chichester Harbour is the ideal classroom: sheltered waters, varied coastline and plenty of wildlife to keep things interesting between learning. Small groups mean you'll get plenty of individual attention from our qualified coaches.
What your day looks like
The morning starts at the slipway with introductions and a look at the equipment. We cover the basics on land first, including how to hold the paddle, how to sit in the kayak, what to do if things go sideways (literally). Then we go onto the water and the real learning begins.
The first hour is about getting comfortable. Launching, landing, finding your balance and discovering that a sea kayak is far more stable than it looks. We work on forward paddling - not just moving, but moving efficiently. There's a rhythm to good paddling that clicks somewhere around the third attempt and suddenly you're gliding rather than fighting.
After lunch, the pace picks up. We cover turning, manoeuvring in tighter spaces and reading the water around you - tides, wind and how to use them rather than battle against them.
The afternoon session takes us further into the harbour, putting the morning's skills into practice in a real environment. You'll learn what to look for when planning your own trips: safe launch spots, weather signs and the etiquette of sharing the water with sailors, wildlife and other paddlers.
By the end of the day, most people are surprised at how far they've come. You arrive wondering if you can stay upright. You leave planning your first weekend trip.
