Stand up, paddle out, and discover your new favourite thing

New to paddleboarding? Our introduction course gets you standing, paddling and smiling in no time. Based on the River Arun at Pulborough, which is sheltered, flat, and perfect for learning, you'll cover the essentials: getting on and off the board, basic strokes, steering and staying safe on the water.

Suitable for complete beginners. We provide everything you need, including patience.

Introduction to Paddleboarding

Standing up for the first time

Paddleboarding looks easy until you try it. Then it looks impossible. Then, usually about fifteen minutes in, something clicks and it becomes the most natural thing in the world. That progression, from wobble to confidence, is what this course is all about.

We start on the riverbank with the basics: how to hold the paddle (it goes the other way around — everyone gets this wrong), how to get on the board from kneeling and how to stand up without the board deciding to go somewhere without you. Then we're on the water and the river does you a favour by being completely flat and utterly forgiving.

By the end of the session, you'll be standing comfortably, paddling in a straight line, turning, and crucially, knowing how to fall off and get back on with minimal fuss. Most people leave the course already planning their next paddle. Paddleboarding has a way of getting under your skin like that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to stand up?
Almost certainly. Most people are standing comfortably within 15-20 minutes. We start on your knees and progress to standing when you're ready.
Will I fall in?
Possibly — and that's completely fine. The river is calm and shallow, and getting back on the board is part of the course. Wear something you're happy getting wet.
Do I need to be able to swim?
We recommend being comfortable in water. You'll wear a buoyancy aid at all times, and the river at Pulborough is sheltered and relatively shallow.
Is this suitable for older adults?
Absolutely. Paddleboarding is low-impact and our coaches adapt to every individual's pace and ability. Balance improves quickly with practice.
What should I wear?
Swimwear or quick-dry clothing. Expect to get wet. Bring shoes that can go in the water — no bare feet. We provide the board, paddle, and buoyancy aid.
